What is the Gospel?

Pastor Chet Howes and Associate Pastor Stephen Baker give an answer to this profound question.

The Gospel is the good news of Jesus Christ that makes it possible for us to be right with God.

Is quoting and believing John 3:16 enough?

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.”

It could possibly be enough.

Let me explain the Gospel like this:

  • God is our holy Creator and sovereign King.
  • We have been created by God to live in a loving relationship with Him for His glory, and to enjoy Him forever.
  • But we have all sinned, both in Adam (the representative head of the human race) and in what we do individually (Romans 3:23; 5:12).
  • We are therefore spiritually dead—separated from God, in a helpless condition unable to break away from our sin by our own strength or good works (Romans 5:6-8; Psalm 51:5; Ephesians 2:1). If this hopeless condition is not remedied, we would ultimately end up in hell (Romans 6:23; Ephesians 2:3). We need God to give us spiritual life (Ezekiel 37:1-14; John 3:3).
  • But the kind and loving Creator God sent His Son, Jesus Christ—fully God and fully man (John 1:1, 14-18; Philippians 2:5-11) to die the death we rightly deserve (Romans 5:6-8; Psalm 51:5; Ephesians 2:1).
  • God raised Jesus up from the dead so we may be declared “right,” or guiltless before God to show that His work of redemption—overcoming sin and death—was accepted by God the Father (1 Corinthians 15).
  • In order for us to receive the benefit of Christ’s sacrifice—to have it credited to us and to have our sins’ penalty erased by Jesus—we must come to Him by faith and admit our sins, turn from them, and trust in Jesus Christ alone for salvation (Mark 1:14-15; 2 Corinthians 5:21; Ephesians 2:8-9).

Only then may we glorify God and enjoy Him forever.

Jesus Christ is the Gospel. Faith Fellowship neither seeks nor teaches any other gospel (Acts 4:12).
